Challenge

New Recipe for D-Day! Pimping the Beast!

Today is the first of August, which means it is only 1 month till Spring is here!

It also means that I have officially started The Paleo Kiwi: 31 Day Challenge!

Today has just meant a lot of tightening up for me.  Because I have been mostly paleo, the only challenge I really had was keeping away from my children’s snack box!

I also felt like a treat, I lost another 500 grams, so I decided to work off enough calories to try out a new Recipe I have been saving for such an occasion!

Who doesn’t love a good roast!?!

I decided to go with a Roast Chicken, usually the ‘Non-Paleo’ me would load up on Carbs – crispy roast potatoes, tons of chicken gravy and lets not forget those tasty supermarket bought dinner rolls, DELISH!

But we didn’t have any of that today!

Today it was Roast Chicken, Roasted Sweet Potato and Coleslaw.

I was walking through the Supermarket this morning trying to find a pre-made coleslaw so that all I had to do was add dressing…

Nope!

Every pre-made had a million ‘other’ ingredients, a lot of them in ‘Chemical’ language or some of them were things you would never have thought should actually go in Coleslaw!!, so I went old school and made my own!

I went simple as Pie with the coleslaw – Carrot, Cabbage and Beetroot – I didn’t really have too much time up my sleeve because I spent all my time making this bad boy…

Paleo Mayo – from The Paleo Mom

As far as homemade dressings and mayo go (tbh – never made one before) this one is pretty darn tasty!

I didn’t quite whip it for long enough to make it super creamy, but that was fine because in a coleslaw it doesn’t really matter!

I mixed up about  2 tbsp of the Mayo with my 3 cup worth of grated veg and it was done!  Well not actually done, I let it sit in the fridge for an hour or so.

So for Paleo’goers, totally give this one a jam!

Paleo Mayo

Paleo Mayo | On a Jam Hunt Blog

1.    Combine olive oil and avocado oil in a measuring cup (or other good vessel for controlled pouring).
2.    Place lemon juice, vinegar, mustard and egg yolks in food processor or blender.  Process until creamy (maybe 15 seconds?).
3.    With blender or food processor still running, VERY slowly dribble in the oil (think of it taking at least 3 minutes to add in all of the oil).  It should stay thick and gradually get lighter and lighter (and look more and more like mayonnaise) as you add the oil.
4.    I typically like to pour out my mayonnaise into a bowl and whip it by hand with a whisk at the end just to make sure all the oil is well incorporated (if you have a really good food processor, you probably won’t need to do this).  You now have paleo mayo!!!

Totally didn’t see that Paleo Mom actually has her own recipe for The Best Creamy Coleslaw.  I will have to try it!

So if you thought that just because you have gone Paleo, that you would have to miss out…

Fear not!

We have Mayo!

Jay 🙂

P.S. Long Run tomorrow!! Excitement stations!!!

Freeking out about fuel! Pimping the Beast!

Today I finished the last run required of me before I go into Long Run Saturday.

Tomorrow is also the 1st of August!

Tomorrow we start 31 Days strictly Paleo.

30 minutes ago, I was freeking out about what and how I am going to fuel for this run.

Last week, where I completed around 8k (not considered a ‘long run’ but in respect to my timing and pace, it kinda is, especially when you run that 8k on The Mount!) in the last 2 or so k I started to feel tired and drained.
I put half of this down to being unfit, and half of it down to not eating/drinking correctly before hand.

I know, I know, there are probably people out there saying this, that and the other about the fact I shouldn’t stress so much about it, but when you care so much about performing, it IS kind of a big deal.  I am a little bit of a perfectionist, and I want to get it right!

Anywho, googled a bit, read a bit and have come up with a bit of a plan to get things right.

Foods that have been recommended to me for pre-run include:

Low Fibre Fruits – banana, peaches, melon
Egg
Protein Powder
If you are in a pinch – Baby food, fruit kinds and animal product types.

So I will give it a jam.

I shouldn’t need any ‘during run’ fuel, and I only need water, no electrolyte bevey required.

I have roughly 9k on my agenda, but will skip running ‘Up’ the Mount this weekend.

Wish me luck for the next 31 days, sounds like there is a good group of people participating, so I am amped to ‘keep it real’ with them.

So…what are your August Plans?

Gonna try a Paleo month with me?

You should so totally try!

Running and running!

Jay 🙂

Will it fit!?!? Pimping the Beast!

So…

Let’s just forget what I said about ‘Weightloss’ last night, I need to stop being ‘comfy’!

Anywho,

Remember last time I was training for Ekiden? How I set a goal for myself to get into a Size 12 shirt?

Well shit, I did it again!

Except this time, I am committing to getting into a size 10 shirt!

I have maintained a size 12 since then…

Ekiden Shirt | On a Jam Hunt Blog

But I haven’t been a size 10 since well before I met my husband… like 5 or so years ago!

So its time to get serious about things, time to shred some body fat!

I don’t overly want to look like an idiot squirming into my shirt the next time I take one of these pics!  Piling on the PRESSURE!

But it is the kind of pressure I need, I have to stop being so comfortable and get aggressive!

So I have had Becks – the lovely lady that is coordinating our teams, to order me a size 10.  LOCKED IN!

Right, I better go work out!

And run a little,

Or a lot,

Run Some!

Jay 🙂

Visual Goals – Pimping the Beast!

Ok, so don’t get all judgey on me for what you are about to see lol

I am a big organisational freak when I put some energy into things, and what I like is to see my results as they unfold.

I guess you could say its something of a Motivational Board, but really, it is just my Plan to Win!  When I say ‘Win’, what I actually mean is “Not Die”!

I have mentioned everything here, from Goal weights (not that I am too focused on this anymore), to my Official Training Plan.

Having my plan in front of my face every day keeps me focused on what I need to do to get to my goals.

I am a bit of a Geek, I will admit it, but I am determined to be Awesomer, and I know deep down inside that if I don’t have a strict plan then I wont achieve, and I wont be a happy camper.  Talk about PRESSURE!

There is also a little chaos induced anxiety when I don’t have things all systematic.  I feel like I am out of control and not on track, so to make this a positive process, I need it all planned out.

And, because I am a stay at home mum, I have to make sure that I am a mum first, and a runner second, so I even have a ‘Care’ plan for my kids, I don;t like to leave things to chance and last minute rush decisions.  So I pretty much have my next 6 months set out before me!

Believe you me, this may seem pretty pedantic, but without planning all the finer details, I cannot relax about getting my self to the Start Line.

So excuse my poor photos… I haven’t yet got it all up on the wall…

Now, as I said up there, I have taken the focus off Weight-loss for a bit.  I have actually been quite haphazard with my diet, I have lost weight in the last week, but I have stopped focusing on it so much.
In all honesty, I still haven’t got my ‘mojo’ back.  I don’t have the motivation to keep my days 100% to my initial plan, and this stresses me out!  So I am taking a load off and keeping it simple by just making sure I get 1 or 2 of my meals 100% to plan, and no after dinner eating!
If you are following me on Twitter, you would know how much I have been whinging about cupcakes and ice cream!  I whinge about it, but I have not yet eaten any of it, bleh!

My training plan for TUM (Tarawera) starts from today.  Its actually more just a Marathon Plan with about 8 or so weeks tact on to the front of it to keep myself gradually working upward in k’s.
Since having this damn chest infection and flu (Or whatever it was), I am really behind in my fitness.  Actually almost back at square one as I hadn’t quite got my shit together in the weeks before I got sick.

I missed out on the First of my Buffalo Trail series runs.  I’ve been crook for like forever, and last week was the toughest week of it.  But not to worry, I still have 1 more run on the 16th August, 12km, I should be ready by then to give it a good go!

Anywho,

It’s dinner time, and I have just finished Bootcamp, that means I am SUPER HUNGRY and want to EAT ALL THE THINGS!

I’ll catch you in a bit,

Tomorrow I run!

Exciting!

Jay 🙂

What’s on the Menu – Pimping the Beast

Another goody from the the last time I ‘Pimped the Beast’, was Menu Planning.

I actually haven’t stopped Menu Planning since I started (it helps save a bit of cash), but I need to change things up a bit to get myself back on track.

I am still eating predominantly Paleo, but Grains seem to keep appearing back in my diet, and my portion sizes are going a bit out the window.

So back to religious logging and back to careful menu planning!

Menu Plan | On a Jam Hunt Blog

If you are on MyFitnessPal, feel free to add me, User Name – jam_hunt.

My next thoughts on diet is getting the balance right.  I ideally want to make it work from a Long Distance runner point of view, so getting things right is crucial to how I perform.  I’d hate to Bonk, so I need to figure it out before Event time!

I have searched a few websites just quickly and have found the article – Eat like a Caveman, Train like a caveman from Runkeeper.com.  A very brief insight to getting the balance right and recommends Long Distance Runners get the Book – Paleo Diet for Athletes.

So I bought it secondhand on Abesbooks.

Hopefully I get some good pointers!

In other news, I’ve just been and done BootCamp, and after being sick for FOREVER!!  I feel like I am back at square 1!  Even as I type this I am so shakey!
I thought after the warm up and the first circuit of Upper body, that I wasn’t doing too badly.  We got into the second circuit of Lower body… Shit got Real!  Real wobbly!  Lack of oxygen plus exertion equals light-headedness and dizzy spells.

I think perhaps I went back too early… I’ll go back in two days just to check. ha!

Even though I had a terrible time, it was Awesome!

Gotta get healthy and back to Hundy percent, I have got cals to burn and fitness to gain, Like yesterday!

Anywho,

How have you Pimped the Beast today?

Menu Planning on your horizon?

See you in a wee bit,

Running a little,

Jay 🙂

Pimping the Beast – Clearing out Spaces

One of the first things I did last time that helped bunches was to clear out my spaces – refrigerator, pantry, other cluttered areas of my home.  Pretty much any space that visually wasn’t conducive to feeling good about smashing out the day.

As I take a look back at the post from last time I did this, it seems kinda silly that some of the contents of my fridge back then, still remains in there now!!  Perhaps, I should go back and look at ‘Use by’s’!

‘Clearing of spaces’ from last time – some of those Jars look familiar!

I have a lot of spaces to get sorted, namely my downstairs room that also serves as a gym’ish.  There is Equipment down there that needs tidying, assembling and organizing, mostly just to make sense of everything.

But for now, a pic of what I have accomplished today…

Clearing Spaces | On jam_hunt blog

It didn’t actually take me that long to get it back to a good state.  Funnily enough I didn’t actually have any Junk to get rid of, not one sweet tasting morsel in site!  Must be doing something right!

You may notice that my fridge is ‘Beer free’.  My husband bought a Booze fridge, so you can be assured that I am not totally insane ha!

I also cleaned out my children’s play room/Study – getting rid of toys that weren’t really age appropriate/were junk, Did a major cull on dressers and draws and un-cluttered my bedroom and hallway cupboard.  Progress!

Oh and last night as I was coming home from doing some shopping, there in my carport was a box that weighed a million ton.  Once I assemble it, I’ll let you know what it is and how secretly excited I am about it! – Oooo I kinda almost just gave it away! Eee!!

I still have a bunch of spaces in my house to clean and organise over the weekend, because I am still ill things don’t seem to be happening in much of a hurry.  Serious case of trouble breathing and crabby children!

So, when was the last time sorted you food spaces?

Maybe your next mission?

Have you started Pimping the Beast with me?

Not yet running (but still dreaming about it EVERY SINGLE MINUTE!),

Jay 🙂

Pimping the Beast: 2nd Edition

So if you have been around a while, you would remember the first time ‘I Pimped the Beast’ and the awesome results I got out of the whole process.

Well, I’m doing it again as an attempt to get myself through the the rest of the winter.

I think I have had a super bad case of the Winter Blues, and it doesn’t help that I have been sick for the majority of the first month of winter.

Perhaps the changes will help kick this ‘sick’ funk, but in any case if I can make it to spring with a better frame of mind, then my other goals will surely be more easily attained!

So for those newbies to my Blog, let me explain exactly what Pimping the Beast is…

Heard of that show ‘Pimp my Ride’?

It’s kinda like that.
You start where you are, make a plan and hold yourself accountable by sharing your changes/’something new’ with me (or blog about it )
That way you turn your ‘now’ self into a better awesomer version of yourself.

You become a better Beast… Hence the title Pimping the Beast!

Hopefully the changes you make and new good habits you form will stick with you to keep yourself on the good path.

So we are 8 weeks from spring, and I have figured that I will post a PTB post at least every third day, which means Aprox 19 new things/changes/improvements to plan for.

I’ve pre-planned all my awesome things and now I just need to plan how and when to execute.

Just to get some ideas of your own going, I have planned the following:

New recipes, foods, exercises…

As well as some other choice things – BootCamp goals, new health/fitness/running blogs and articles of interest,

Anyway hopefully this will inspire you to pimp your beast too, and make it through winter ready to rock spring and summer!

So, as with last time, I need you to comment with your changes/achievements/Pimping action!

Let’s do it,

Starting tomorrow – Saturday, who says changes only happen on a Monday! YEOW!

Still sick, so not so much running,

But getting the show on the road!

Come with me!

Jay 🙂

A step up in my Journey

Sitting in the waiting room of my Doctors Practice, waiting to be seen about my never-ending Cold/Flu/whatever it is.  As I near the end of a page in a book my friend borrowed me, the doctor (not my usual doctor) approaches and calls my name.  I rush the last sentence to the page, close it up and proceed toward the Doc’s room.

“What are you reading?”

“Oh, just this book on running”

“Oh right, let’s see…, uh this is about Running Ultra’s…. Are you running one?”

“Not quite yet, I am baby stepping it, doing it in relay first”

“That’s awesome! I run too!”

And so a raft of running experiences takes form in re-living awesome memories through story telling.

So if one is going to take a step up in their ‘Running’ Journey what better step to take than – Tarawera Ultra

This is my attempt at baby steps to eventually get to the 60k, 85k then eventually 100!?!

But I am going to have to do some awesome things in between!

I spent a while organising the events out for the remainder of the year.  Things have pretty much been on hold since the completion of my first Half Marathon, so I am excited to finally be getting back into some ‘goal’ induced Running!

July/August:  First up is one I wanted to do last year but kind of missed out on – Buffalo Trail Runner – 12km

It is two 12k trails runs over the Buffalo Girl Trail at TECT Park Tauranga, It is designed to encourage people to continue training over the Winter months.
You complete the first of the Series in July and then the second in August doing your best to train up and reduce your 12k times.

I have run a smyllion times up at the TECT, it is the closest trail I have to where I live, so this series will be the ideal training run for the big kahuna 30k in November.

If I manage to kick this illness, I will be completing the first of the series next Saturday!

October:  Next up is Ekiden (Apparently The Home of Self-proclaimed Fancy Dress World Champs).

Leg 3 – 7.93km

Read all about last years relay here!
This year we have 2 teams again, some of the same runners, some of them new to our group.  Whatever the combo I just know that it is going to be the BEST TIME!
I did this one in 56min last year, so I am looking at pulling that back a bit, especially now that I know exactly how many hills I have to climb!

November :  So the next one is the Big Kahuna!  The Smiths Sport Shoes Tauranga Trail Run.

Tunnel on Te Rerenga

Last year I finished the 15km in 2.12hrs, that was a really long time for me to be on my feet in the freeking hot, running Hills and shit!

This year I am doubling up and busting out the 30km, which is the 15km distance TIMES TWO!

It will be a good lead up to the 36km I will run at Tarawera in Team: Couch2Kawerau

100km Tarawera Trail Run Map

From all these races I will hope to have put together some decent mileage, a good race day plan, some good nutrition and hydration habits to get me through to my ‘Baby step’ up to the Big League!

In between these events will be a whole bunch of training.

I have decided to try shred as much as I can before August.  Getting myself back logging on MFP.
Glenn will be taking me out for some Recon runs over the 36k that I will be enduring.
And I plan to be making a few trips out to the TECT (TECT All terrain Park) and be doing some speed work out up and around the Mount (Mount Maunganui).

I will most probably die a few times in the process, but I will learn so much about my body and its limits.

I can’t wait to meet more Ultra Runners too!

Exciting times ahead and you know I am going to share the whole lot with you!

What plans do you have up your sleeve for the remainder of the year?

Any Ultra’s on your horizon?

Running Baby steps,

Jay 🙂

So this is happening…

Tarawera Relay Confirmation
I have been going on and on about it for like the last year and a half.

Now it is just a little more official!

Time to step this shit up a notch!

I will be relaying an 85km distance with a friend – Glenn, the guy that twisted my arm!

How much excitement is going through my head at the moment… still haven’t decided.

How much ‘holy shit’ is going through my head at the moment… TONS!

Tomorrow is the first day of getting serious with myself.  But in the funnest way possible.

Lets get amongst it!

Still running,

and then running some more,

and then some more,

Jay 🙂

Love it when it hurts!

Had BootCamp tonight,  Almost died!  As I usually do.

Mr Jamhunt – “so did you die at boot camp tonight?”

Me – “uh yeah, big time!  I almost spewed 3 times, last time I only almost spewed 2 times”
I guess that is how you know it is working!
Getting my fat ass back into gear!
Jay 🙂
